A SINO-TIBETAN BELT ORNAMENT OR TOGGLE

NORTHERN CHINA OR TIBETAN PLEATEAU, QING DYNASTY (1644 - 1911)

The discoid toggle comprised of carved fossiliferous limestone, centrally pierced and fitted with silver mounts decorated with engraved Chinese-style bats. Such toggles were used as counterweights in conjunction with pouches, trousses, and other belt-worn accoutrements.
